11 Marion Trades students host open house

Marion Independent and Linn-Mar students learned many valuable hands-on lessons from Marion Building Trades program instructor Bruce Weisinger as they built the home located at 1064 Alexis Court in Marion from scratch. The following nine students from Marion High School participated in the project: Dakotah Brecht, Brady Donahue, Ryan Draeger, Tylor Fairbanks, Austin Gleason, Isaak Hahn, Briar Lewis, Noah Sams, and Blake Vanourney. The following five students are from Linn-Mar High School: Chase Bading, Nick Gonsoski, Blake Houdeshell, Devon Svoboda and Kegan Welsh. According to Welsh, Weisinger said they were required to build it as if they themselves would live in the house.

Fifth grade Vernon Middle School math teacher Dana Phillips teaches her students computer coding at least once a week. Coding is using algorithms to program a machine to do specific tasks.

The Marion Independent Board of Education met on Monday, May 8, at 4:30 p.m. during a regular board session, where several Emerson area residents were in attendance. They were there to learn more about the Emerson Learning Center Proposal from Home School Director Tom Ertz.

"The ruts were rather deep that year," said Frieda's daughter and driving instructor, Edith (Corporon) Pearson in a recent Times interview.
16 MISD students discover Brucemore past from tour, technology

On Monday, April 24, three inspired Francis Marion Intermediate School fourth graders - McKinzie Strader, Harper Griffin, and Noah Conway - spoke to the MISD Board at its regular meeting about the group's Brucemore field trip experience and educational journey of discovery. The students said they learned a lot while completing the project and also taught their tour guide a few things as well.
17 Young Eagles spread wings and expand horizons

Roughly 60 area kids, ages 8 to 17, spread their wings as they flew for the first time during an Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 33 Young Eagles Flight Rally at the Marion Airport from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 22. Seven volunteer EAA pilots offered airplane saftey tips to the youth before soaring to the skies.

19 Marion PD hosts Animal Emergency Care and CPR course

Marion Fire Station No. 2 hosted an Operational K-9 Handler and First Responder Course for emergency responders from several agencies on Fri., April 7, from 9 a.m. to noon. "The training was great," said Capt. Shawn Fluharty, who took the course for the first time.
20 Marion schools display rising assessment scores

The MISD Board of Education viewed performance assessment results in keeping with "No Child Left Behind" during a regular meeting on April 10 at 7 p.m. Marion students' scores overall ranked above Grant Wood AEA and Iowa's in several subject areas and grade levels.
