12 Red Cedar Chamber Music instrumental in MISD student learning

Red Cedar Chamber Music violinist Miera Kim and cellist Carey Bostian filled the Granger House in Marion with instrumental sounds on the morning of Friday, September 22. The group played various classical period pieces in the parlor before several groups of Marion Independent School District 2nd and 3rd grade students throughout the morning. The inspirational and informative performances offered the students a real-life experience as to what middle-class life would have been like during the Victorian era.
   
13 Bistro 3 Nineteen to open soon in Uptown

"We are very excited to become a part of the Marion community," said Bistro 3 Nineteen Owner/Executive Chef Brittany Hannah. The new business will soon open in the former Maid-Rite restaurant (a.k.a. the Owen Building) on the northeast corner of 7th Avenue and 10th Street across from City Square Park.
   
14 Fundraiser encourages dystonia awareness

Dogs4Dystonia Dog Walk organizer and East Central Iowa Corridor Dystonia Support Group Leader Sheila Killham, 46, was diagnosed with a rare, neurological muscle movement disorder called dystonia several years ago while living in Texas. She said the disease first attacked her vocal cords, then later progressed to her legs, feet, and neck. "I have Generalized and Cervical Dystonia. I have to puree all my foods and liquids are very difficult for me to swallow. I have to drink small amounts of warm water standing up and most medication needs to be very small pills or liquid. Anything bigger, I would choke and cannot swallow," she said.
   
15 MEDCO discusses career engaging portal with MISD BOE

16 MISD honors America Reads Bookmark Contest winner

Current Francis Marion Independent 3rd Grade student Natalie Heald, was one of five grand prize entrant winners chosen in a recent America Reads Bookmark Contest. Heald was chosen for her unique bookmark drawing, depicting a happy young lad holding a puppy entitled Shiloh (her favorite book). Heald was later honored for her achievement by the MISD Board of Education during its regular meeting on Monday, September 11.

18 Going green with grazing goats

A Goats on the Go's tribe of goats, all colors and sizes, grazed among bright sunflowers and over-grown ragweed in a temporary fenced-in acre of the Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 6. Two goats near a foot-trodden dirt path were seen butting heads over one sky scraping blade among thousands, as 238 of their friends seemed content to graze without incident in the vast, delectable buffet of nature.
   
19 Prospect Meadows Ball Fields to start seeing progress

Prospect Meadows Ball Fields (PMBF) complex project is planning to hit one out of the park, with a 17-field baseball/softball complex, ideally situated northeast of Marion, on a 128-acre site. According to prospectmeadows.com, "the site is owned by Linn County and is bordered by County Home Road to the north and Highway 13 to the west."
   
20 The butterfly effect takes flight in Marion

DKW Art Gallery & Studios owner Mark Weiser said he got the idea to make Marion a butterfly community after noticing THE chocolate SHOP's large, colorful, attached butterfly on its building.
