11 Communication strategies for prickly porcupines

Some people are thought of as porcupines, said Mt. Mercy University professor Dr. David Klope, Ph.D, to those who had gathered at the Marion Library at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 11, to hear him speak about Hugging the Porcupine: Speaking Peace to Hate. During the session, the audience learned about communication strategies for those hard-to-hug people and for others who desire a relationship with them.
   
12 St. Paul's Lutheran Church to restore bell tower

The St. Paul's Lutheran Church bell tolled 105 times at the funeral of OraLee Grabau before she was laid to rest in Cedar Memorial on July 22, 2016. The bell (cast in Holland) rang once for each year of her life. OraLee Grabau, 105, passed away on July 22, 2016. She was born in Boone, Iowa, and married Leonard in 1934. She was a Simpson College graduate and taught at Linn-Mar until retiring in 1976. She also taught Sunday school for 40 years. In addition, she started the church's Lutheran Women Missionary League. Her son and grandchildren are still congregation members.

19 MISD Early Retirement Plan

On Monday, Feb. 27, at 4:30 p.m., The Marion Independent School District Board of Education initiated a voluntary early retirement incentive package proposal for employees district-wide who are age 55 prior to July 1, 2017, and who have worked 15 or more years in the MISD as of July 1, 2017.
   
20 A Quilt of Valor

A Quilt of Valor, made one piece at a time, was presented to patriot Barb (Burmeister) Kula of Anamosa at the Marion Hy-Vee on Tuesday, Feb. 14, by Kay Prasil of Lisbon and Ralph Osenbaugh of Cedar Rapids. Kula said she most likely will frame her made-from-the heart-and-hands heirloom and then later be buried with it when the time comes.
