Dear Savvy Senior,
Since retiring a few years ago, my husband has become increasingly irritable and apathetic. I'm concerned that he's depressed, even though he may not admit it. Where can we turn to get help with this, and what, if anything, does Medicare pay for?

Robert C. "Bob" Wheeler, 85, of Hiawatha, passed away Saturday, December 9, 2017, at Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. Per Bob's wishes, his body has been gifted to the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2017, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion. Memorial Service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 15, 2017, at the funeral home conducted by Bob's son, Commander Dennis Wheeler, US Navy Chaplain. Military honors will be provided by Marine Corps League-Cedar Valley Detachment of Cedar Rapids.
14 Scouts see increase in Scouting for Food Drive for a record-breaking year

The Boy Scouts of America, Hawkeye Area Council has officially wrapped up its Annual Scouting for Food Campaign. The Scouts took to the streets, passing out bags in neighborhoods 50 people could donate. Citizens wishing to donate placed bags full of non-perishable food on their doorsteps. Made available to over 131,000 homes. Local Scout Troops and Packs picked up the bags and all donations went directly to the HACAP Food Reservoir and other local food agencies in 7 counties in Eastern Iowa. Collectively, the Scouting for Food Drive brought in a total of 77,640 pounds of food from Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and its neighboring areas which translates to over 64,700 meals to be served for those who need it most during this winter.
15 Secretary Pate approves Linn County redistricting plan

Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate has announced his approval of the Supervisor District Plan submitted to his office by the Linn County Board of Supervisors. The plan redraws supervisor districts in the county, following an affirmative vote by Linn County voters to reduce the number of supervisor districts from five down to three. The new plan is effective beginning with the 2018 election cycle.
16 Secretary Pate begins mailing Voter ID cards to registered voters

DES MOINES - Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate announced that his office began mailing Voter ID cards last week to registered voters in the state who do not possess a valid Iowa driver's license or non-driver's ID. The cards are free and will be sent automatically to 123,000 Iowans, roughly six percent of the state's registered voters.
17 Special Olympics Iowa to hold Unified Sports Day at Cornell College

The annual Special Olympics Iowa (SOIA) Unified Sports Day at Cornell College in Mount Vernon will be held Saturday, December 16. SOIA athletes from Cedar Rapids, Clinton, Dubuque, Mount Vernon, the Quad Cities, Vinton and the surrounding areas are expected to attend. The athletes will partner with Cornell College students for a day of unified activities.
