11 Get to know the candidates

Candidates running for Boards of Education for Linn-Mar Community School District and Marion Independent School District were asked by the Marion Times why they are running for office and what they want eligible voters to know about them prior to election day. The responses from the Linn-Mar Community School District are published this week (August 24, 2017) and the Marion Independent School District candidate responses will be published in next week's Marion Times (August 31, 2017).
Note: The Marion Times has not altered any responses. The Marion Times staff does not endorse any one candidate.
   
12 Update on Voter Security Issue

A security lapse occurred in the Linn County Elections office on August 4, 2017. According to an August 16, 2017 news release, the Linn County Auditor's Office has been working diligently over the past 12 days with both law enforcement and online companies to minimize any potential issues. "We have appeared before the Board of Supervisors four times over the last 12 days, and we have been in constant communication with the Linn County Attorney's office."
   
13 'Protect Pollinators' Stamps now available

On August 3, 2017, the United States Postal Service issued a set of stamps called "Protect Pollinators." They are available as a sheet of 20 forever stamps for $9.80 and include five pictures: a monarch butterfly on a coneflower, a western honeybee on golden ragwort, a monarch on a zinnia flower, a western honeybee on a New England aster, and a monarch on goldenrod.
   
14 A bison's migration to Marion's Lowe Park

15 Poor turnout for Linn County Special Election

The Linn County Supervisors will each represent a district in which they live based on the results of the election on August 1. Voters overwhelmingly supported Plan 3, which divides the county into three similarly-sized districts based on population. Each will be represented by a supervisor. The plan received more than 70 percent of the votes countywide and more than 79 percent in the 14 combined Marion precincts.

17 Update on gunshot fired near Marion Public Library

Back on Thursday, June 22, around 11:55 p.m., Marion Police Department officers responded to a reported shooting near the Marion Public Library, located at 1095 6th Avenue. According a new Marion Police Department media release, after speaking with the Linn County Attorney, Marion Police charged Matthew Boleyn, age 37, with Disorderly Conduct and Criminal Mischief in the 4th degree on July 12, 2017.
