1 Montessori of Marion celebrates first graduation

The Montessori School of Marion opened its doors in August, 2016, as Marion's very first and only Montessori School. School Director and Founder of the Montessori School of Marion, Aurora Costache, has been a Montessori teacher since 2004 and received her American Montessori Society (AMS) diploma in 2005. Aurora Costache has used her Montessori training in many different countries including Japan and Italy. It had always been a dream of hers to open her own school, so she did!
   
2 Love is in the air for Call to Artists exhibit

This February, one of our beloved local galleries hosted a Call to Artists exhibition. The theme for the show was titled "Attraction" to celebrate February as the month of love. Many of Marion and Cedar Rapids' finest artists entered their masterpieces in the Call to Artists exhibit and were showcased from February 11 until March 6.
   
3 Art exhibit at Lowe Park displays local talent, passion for the arts

On Monday, Feb. 20, 2017, the Marion Arts Council hosted the opening reception for the Mount Mercy University, Kirkwood Community College, and Indian Creek Elementary School Art Exhibition. The event took place in the Lowe Gallery from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Students, teachers, and professors from all three schools were present at the event and welcomed the public to view the wonderful art.
   
4 Making dreams a reality in the 'Big Apple'

Back in November, we interviewed a Linn-Mar student who was on his way to the Big Apple to perform in an Honor Choir at Carnegie Hall. The student, Lucas Rodriguez, made it back from New York just last week. The Honor Performance Series Concert took place on February 5, 2017.
   
5 New art exhibit at Lowe

On January 28, 2017, Lowe Park Arts and Environments Center welcomed the students of Mount Mercy University, Kirkwood Community College, and Indian Creek Elementary School to be featured in its art gallery. For the fifth year in a row, the Marion Arts Council has featured Mount Mercy University, Kirkwood Community College, and one local grade school at the Lowe Park Gallery.
   
6 Anointed with the magic of art to create angels on Earth

When Debra Kathlene Weiser was a little girl growing up in Ireland, she would often watch her mother paint. Enthralled with how her mother would take a blank piece of paper and turn it into something so pretty, she asked her mom how it was done. "Katie, darling, it is magic!" Weiser believed her mother implicitly and asked to be endowed with her talents. A little ceremony was held and she was anointed with the magic of art.

8 Art happenings in Marion during February

Looking for a way to enjoy the arts this February? Lucky for you, there are plenty of opportunities to go out and see some great art made by the wonderful Marion artists. The Mary Weaver and Lynda Black-Smith exhibition at Lowe Park Art Gallery closed on January 28, 2017, and Lowe will be presenting a new exhibition shortly. In addition to the new exhibition, the Lowe Park Art Gallery also has on display the collection of the Marion Arts Council. It is always fantastic to visit the art on display at Lowe Park Art Gallery. In addition to showcasing local artists, Lowe Park Art Gallery also showcases children's artwork from a different local school with each new exhibition.
   
9 Creating art, a passion for photography, graphics, and collage

This week, I would like to introduce another wonderful Marion artist. Randah Espy is a Mount Mercy University graduate with a Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design and Fine Arts. Espy works primarily in the digital arts, but also has an affinity for mixed media collage. On top of her full-time career, Espy opened up a freelance design business just this year.
   
10 Donate this holiday season for those in need

Are you or your kids looking for a way to give back this holiday season? The Marion Public Library has just the thing. This year, the Metro Library Network is partnering up with HACAP for the Read to Feed event this Fall. The event began on Oct. 31, and goes until Nov. 30, 2016. The Marion Public Library is collecting non-perishable food items to help out and support the community's Churches of Marion Food Pantry.
