1 Five new laws to know when you hit the road
by By Liz Mathis State Senator · Opinions | June 29th, 2017

The new fiscal year will start on July 1 and that means several new laws will take effect in Iowa. The legislature passed more than one hundred pieces of legislation; many of the laws around driving. One of those laws involves advocacy by Linn-Mar students.

2 Iowa workers, families, and fairness
by By Liz Mathis State Senator · Opinions | February 16th, 2017

We have real issues in our economy: Iowans are working more for less; many have seen their health care and other benefits slashed; and there's an ever-widening gap between those at the top and the middle class. We must find ways to lift up all Iowans with fair wages, benefits and a better quality of life.

3 Iowa students deserve more
by By Liz Mathis State Senator · Opinions | February 9th, 2017

When we invest in kids, we invest in the future. So what will our future look like if we continue to shortchange our children? I knocked on your doors last summer and fall before the election and listened to you about the importance of education. You told me that was a top issue for your families and your future.

4 News at the Capitol and your survey responses
by By Liz Mathis State Senator · Opinions | February 2nd, 2017

This week we had some difficult decisions to make. The Governor and Lt. Governor announced we needed to make mid-year budget cuts. When we left the Capitol last year, we had an agreement between the House and Senate to balance the budget and the Governor signed the deal. As you may know, by law, we balance the budget each year. This week we faced an announcement from the Governor and Lt. Governor that the legislature must make mid-year budget cuts. 7 It's time to vote!
by By Liz Mathis State Senator · Opinions | November 3rd, 2016

The November 8 election is just a few days away. If you haven't already done so, I encourage you to vote-regardless of how you vote. Federal, state and local candidates are on the ballot, so it is important that all Iowans make their voices heard.

8 Expanding skilled workforce is key to continued growth
by By Liz Mathis State Senator · Opinions | October 14th, 2016

Iowa's shortage of skilled workers has been our biggest obstacle to economic growth. Investing in education and job training can change that.

9 Americans deserve fuel choices at the pump
by By Liz Mathis State Senator · Opinions | September 30th, 2016

Here in Iowa, we encourage gas stations to install flex fuel pumps and other equipment to offer homegrown, renewable ethanol and biodiesel. The Legislature's investment of $3 million this year will continue to make tax credits available for retailers that provide biodiesel, E85 and E15; and will increase a tax credit for retailers that supply B11 and higher blends of biodiesel.

10 Working hard and putting Iowans first
by By Liz Mathis State Senator · Opinions | September 22nd, 2016

I love Iowa. I grew up on a farm. Our family owns a business here. My husband and I graduated from the University of Iowa and our children have attended UI and Kirkwood Community College. I am a former journalist and now work for a non-profit organization that helps children. We live in Robins and are invested in our community.
