7 Robert E. Buckley U.S. Army, Private First Class

Private First Class Robert "Bob" Buckley entered the U.S. Army in 1954 and was discharged in 1956. Bob had basic training at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas. He received advanced training in Artillery and Mortar Radar at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. He was transferred with the 26th Field Artillery Division, 9th Infantry Battalion to Germany for seventeen months. Bob worked with large mobile radar sets to detect, track and pinpoint locations of enemy mortar locations. The objective was to determine, as quickly as possible, the exact location of mortars and call in their coordinates to a firing battery before the mortar operators could flee to another location.

10 Vets share recollections in Heritage Center program

The Marion Heritage Center and Museum will present a program, Vietnam: Combat Action 1967 to 1974, on Sunday, Feb. 26. John Nieland, Major, U.S. Army Retired, will speak first on the politics and history of the Vietnam War and relate some of his experiences.
