Grant allows Hiawatha Library playgroup program to continue
by Cynthia Petersen Correspondent · October 31st, 2016

The Play & Learn program, an interactive playgroup facilitated by Parent Education Consortium of Linn County Extension, will continue at Hiawatha Public Library, thanks to a $5,000 grant from World Class Industries and a $5,000 grant from the Program Grant Fund of the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation.

Alicia Mangin, Hiawatha Public Library's Youth Services Librarian, said Play & Learn is a valuable program that enhances early literacy skills and provides an environment for children to interact with others.

"The program would not be possible if not for the generosity of World Class Industries and the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation."

The program, held Thursdays at 10 a.m,, is free and open to children 5 and under and their caregivers.

Each group has a facilitator that plans and sets up activities for the children and their caregivers to play together, with a different topic each week.

The facilitators also help caregivers learn more about child development and how children learn through play. The caregivers can then use what they learn to teach the children to learn and grow at home.

"This is an amazing program," said Mangin. "We are very grateful that Play & Learn can continue at the Hiawatha Library."
