State Senator Liz Mathis declared victory last Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016, in her race for re-election to the State Senate in District 34. Mathis was running against Rene Gadhela, a member of the Linn-Mar Board of Education.

"I am very excited to be given the opportunity to serve four more years in the Senate. I've watched this year as Republicans have broken Medicaid, underfunded our schools, and put our mental health system at risk. I can't wait to get back to the Capitol in January so we can get to work fixing these critical issues," said Mathis.

Mathis is an award-winning journalist, child advocate, and the Iowa State Senator for District 34. She is the Chief Community Officer for Four Oaks, a child advocacy and juvenile justice organization.

Mathis lives in Robins and is married to Mark Mathis. They have two children, Mark Jr. and Mary Frances.

After a busy campaign, Senator Mathis defeated Rene Gadelha by a count of 19,792 to 15,613, winning with 56 percent.

Mathis said, "I want to say thank you to all of the people who supported me throughout the campaign and who voted for me, but I also want to thank Rene and all of her supporters for taking part in the Democratic process. I want to be a Senator for everyone in my district, and we will all need to work together to solve the challenges of the years to come."

Legislators will return to Des Moines in January, with the next session scheduled to start on January 9 and run through April 28.
