Indians finish second in Class 4A
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · March 9th, 2017

With just one quarter remaining in the Class 4A State Championship game last Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, the Marion Indians led by four points and were looking to hold on to reach their season-long goal: win the state title. After fighting off comeback attempts from Boone in their opening round contest and Pella in the semifinals, the Indians were unable to prevent a comeback from North Scott as the Lancers ultimately prevailed in overtime by a final score of 50-42. The game ended the Indians' season with a record of 24-2 overall and a second-place finish in Class 4A.

Everything started off great for Marion with back-to-back three-pointers from freshman phenom Kayba Laube, but North Scott would not be rattled. The teams exchanged baskets and hit big shots throughout the contest as the Indians led by as much as six points several times; their latest six-point lead was with under seven minutes to go in the fourth.

With just over a minute remaining in the fourth quarter, the Lancers took a one-point lead and pushed the gap to two with 37 seconds left after Karli Rucker made one of her two free throw attempts.

The Indians stayed composed as Mia Laube converted on a pair of free throws to tie it up with 17 seconds left. Neither team got a shot off in the remaining seconds, forcing overtime.

In the extra period, it was all North Scott as the Lancers pulled away late to secure the Class 4A Championship.

Mia Laube led Marion with 11 points and six rebounds while Rice and Kayba Laube each had nine points. Randi Wright tallied six points, Maddie Knapp totaled three points, and Caitlyn Smith finished with two points to round out the Marion scoring. North Scott's Karli Rucker led all scorers with 24 points.

Rice and Kayba Laube were selected to the Class 4A All-Tournament Team while Rucker was named team captain. Rucker's sister, Rylie, was also named to the All-Tournament team along with Pella's Kiara Bradley and Xavier's Lexi Noonan.
