Coates excels at State Archery meet
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · March 9th, 2017

It was a deep field loaded with competition from all over the state of Iowa at the 2017 Iowa State Archery meet, but that didn't stop Marion freshman Reid Coates from finishing towards the top of the leaderboard last week. Coates finished with a score of 282 to place 38th out of 814 competitors on the boys' side of the field. The freshman showed great poise with 16 Tens, also having the seventh best score out of freshmen at the state meet.

Sophomore Carter Lantermans finished with a score of 258 and seven Tens to place 349th while senior Brendan Klostermann scored a 252 with three Tens to place 448th overall, rounding things out for the Marion boys.

Senior McKenna Merck was the lone Indian girl to compete as she scored a 267 with eight Tens, good enough to place 168th overall out of 684 girls competing.

Anamosa's Lilly Machart, an eighth-grader, recorded the highest score in the girls' competition. She had a score of 297 and 27 Tens while Solon sophomore Ben McAtee won the boys' competition with a 296 score and 27 Tens.

All four archers from Marion High School shot at least 8 points better than their season average. Coach Kevin Klostermann stated, "All four did a great job representing Marion and the Marion team in the state tournament."
