Linn-Mar students influence texting and driving bill in senate
by Liz Mathis State Senator · March 16th, 2017

Linn-Mar students who visited the Capitol last month to advocate for stricter texting and driving laws helped influence the passage of the first texting and driving bill of the session. The bill states that if a homicide by vehicle involves the use of an electronic communication device, it will be considered a Class C felony. The new bill is SF444. There are other parts to the bill that pertain to drunk driving as well.

The Linn-Mar students lost two classmates in an accident when another driver, alleged to have been texting, rear-ended their car on County Home Road in Linn County. That driver is awaiting trial. The Linn-Mar students visited the Capitol last month and were able to participate in a media conference with the Governor and testify on behalf of their friends. The students will continue to advocate for another bill that prohibits using a cell phone while driving unless it's hands-free.

On another subject, several of you have awakened. You are getting more involved in the political process and vocal about your views. I've heard from you about collective bargaining, guns, workman's comp, school funding, puppy mills, abortion, voter ID, Medicaid, licensure, worker training, funding for the state's colleges and community colleges, and a host of other topics.

Constituents who are informed and engaged create a better government. I have been pleasantly surprised to see so many of you attend my listening posts and our League of Women Voter Forums this session. Our next LWV forum is on Saturday, March 18, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Mercy Medical Center located at 701 10th Street, Cedar Rapids. As always, email me with your opinions and ideas at
