Linn-Mar boys look to reload
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · March 16th, 2017

2016 was somewhat of a down year by traditional Linn-Mar boys' track and field expectations. The team managed to score 16 points at the Iowa High School State Track and Field Meet, but they only placed 17th out of 31 teams that scored points in Class 4A. The foursome of Gavren Docterman, Nick House, Zeal Baker, and Danny Gorsich set the track on fire in the prelims of the Shuttle Hurdle Relay but only managed to place sixth in the finals as Gorsich was unable to compete in the finals. The team is less than a year removed after a slower season, but everyone in the program is excited to rebound in 2017.

Baker, House and Trent Davis are back and will look to keep the Shuttle Hurdle Relay team towards the top of Class 4A while Dalton Gosch, Griffin Freese and Jaidyn Williams will lead the Lion sprinters into the 2017 season. Both Gosch and Freese have plenty of experience at the famed blue oval in Des Moines while Williams, a freshman, will get exposed to some of Class 4A's toughest competitors on a weekly basis early and often.

Long-time distance specialist Michael Mather graduated in 2016 but he is the lone Lion gone from a 4x800 meter relay team that finished ninth at the State Meet last season, as sophomore Trent Long and juniors Ethan Schmidt and Johnny Seitz are back on the team this year. That quartet crossed the stripe with a time of 8:02.87 at the State Meet and missed earning a medal by a little over a second. That alone will be motivation to succeed this season as the Lions will face some excellent competition from all over.

The team is scheduled to compete at the ISU Indoor Meet this week along with an indoor meet at the University of Dubuque on Saturday morning. The first outdoor meet will be at Kingston Stadium in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, March 25.
