Tom Ertz, Director of The Marion Home School Assistance Program presented a "proposal to relocate the current home school program to the Emerson Building," to The Marion Independent School Board on Monday, March 20, at 7 p.m. He said they were asked by the Marion Independent School District if they would consider moving into the Emerson School during their initial repurposing process. New funding opportunities may become available pending legislation. If the home school program relocates to Emerson (2018/19), they will become the sole tenants of the facility.

Ertz said the sale or lease of the current home school facility would offset any required updates for the Emerson building, including a new roof on the gym and north wing, a west boiler replacement and remodeling. Air conditioning in parts of the building was also suggested, as well as paving for new parking.

There are several benefits in the proposal, including the fact that no re-zoning is needed and the current facility, located near the high school, could be used by the district for other needs, one board member suggested.

Several Emerson area neighbors seemed pleased with the new option including a new playground. Mark Morgan, Vice President of Fosters Heating and Air, wrote a letter to the Board, saying he is pleased with the proposal. City Council Member Mary Lou Pazour was in attendence. She was not as optimistic about the suggested lower costs. They are, however, still waiting on another proposal and it was suggested the adjacent parking lot be used for two single-family dwellings built by students.

In addition to Emerson's proposal, the Board voted in favor of a newly proposed preschool plan. The current plan only offers half days, whereas the new one will be a mix of both half and full day cycles that will meet all of the in-district family needs represented.
