All three of Marion Home School's mock trial teams qualified for the State competition and performed well.

Of 105 teams across the state of Iowa, 32 went to the state competition, held March 27 through 29, after winning at the regional level.

Team Golden Eagles placed eighth in the state contests. Its members are Anna Buss, Nathan Charles, Andersen Coates, Clayton Dryden, Logan Flatland, Christian Pint, Dominic Smith, Naomi Smith, and Blake Stickley.

Team GUI won its first three rounds, moving the students into the semi-final rounds. There they defeated Pocahontas by unanimous judge's ballots, qualifying them to compete in the final championship round.

In that final round, by split decision, Team GUI was narrowly defeated, becoming runner-up champions. Team GUI's members are Mitchell Baily, Kathryn Cassidy, Caryn Charles, Sarah Coppa, Megan Flatland, Anna Gardner, Joseph Hartzler, Nate Hawkins, Christopher Scaffidi, and David Scaffidi.

Marion team members won a number of awards as individuals, too. Sarah Coppa, Nate Hawkins, and Uriah Lantzer received Outstanding Attorney Awards.

And Outstanding Witness Awards went to Logan Flatland and David Scaffidi.

Members of the Vincemus team are Jonah Boentoro, John-Paul Buss, Madelyn Cassidy, Antonio Groothuis, Hannah Johnson, Shanae King, Uriah Lantzer, Kelsey Lawson, Gerard Smith, and Micah Smith.

Dana Miller, Head Coach, noted that eight seniors will graduate this year. They are Blake Stickley, Nathan Charles, Anna Buss, Andersen Coates, Clayton Dryden, Christian Pint, Dominic Smith, and Anna Gardner.

Ms. Miller thanked the students for their fine performances and also expressed her appreciation to the others who helped her with coaching: Daniella Scaffidi, Sonya Flatland, Alumni Coach Noah Smith, and Attorney Coach Matt Dake. The following alumni also helped during the season: Lauren Woltz, Ben Carlile, Gabe Groothuis, and Ryan Carlile.
