Indians get even split in wins and losses
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · April 13th, 2017

The Marion girls' tennis team lost its first two match-ups of the season against Mount Vernon and Independence last week to start out the season. Although they have started off their season on a bit of a sour note, they came back in the next two meets to win at the Davenport Assumption Tournament and the dual against Western Dubuque.

Mount Vernon upended the Indians 6-3 in the season-opening contest. Senior Shannon Sellers and junior Calista Dittmer were victorious in singles action, while Sellers and fellow senior Madison Wilson teamed up to get Marion's lone doubles win.

In the 5-4 loss to Independence, Wilson, Sellers, and senior Nicole Toppin picked up Singles wins while Wilson and Sellers got their second Doubles win of the season. But in the end, it wasn't enough to get the team victory against the Independence Mustangs.

Those two losses put a fire in the girls to compete well in the next two meets. On Saturday, April 8, the girls won 5-4 in the tournament at Davenport Assumption. Then on Monday, April 10, the girls played against Western Dubuque with a 6-3 win.

Sellers, Toppin, senior Amery Bruce, and Dittmer all won their Singles matches with Sellers winning with the biggest spread of 10-2 against senior Katelyn Becker of Western Dubuque. Only Wilson and junior Megan Kongable fell in the Singles to senior Morgan Hefel (8-10) and sophomore Brinnley Breitbach (6-10) respectively.

In Doubles, Sellers and Wilson brought the heat and skill to defeat Western Dubuque's Hefel and Becker, 10-2. Toppin and Bruce brought the team its final win against junior Kaitlyn Clemen and junior Rachel Ormord with a score of 10-7. Dittmer and Knongable's Doubles performance was the sole loss for the Marion team as they fell to Ally Besler and Breitbach 2-10.

The Indians will be back in action this week against South Tama County on Thursday, April 13, at 4 p.m. at South Tama. The team will then play at home against Maquoketa Monday, April 17, at 4 p.m.
