Linn-Mar students win at 60th State Science+Technology Fair
by Nancy Grindle Correspondent · April 20th, 2017

On Thursday, March 30, two sets of Linn-Mar students placed well at the Iowa FFA Agri-science Fair at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames.

Ekta Nanda and Chase Krug will advance to the national competition, which will take place at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis in late October.

They are conducting a plant science research project called "Germination Success When Using Different Soil Media." They tested how effective it was to germinate Zea Mayes and Sorghum Bicolor seeds in agar rather than starting them in potting soil. The results of their work have been inconclusive, so they will continue to do additional experimental trials later this spring and summer.

They received partial funding for the project with a grant from the Iowa Junior Academy of Science.

Mirannda Schneider-Kettelkamp and Kaitlin Hagen conducted work in the Behavior and Social Science Team Division, which was held consecutively with the State FFA Agri-science Fair. Their project was called "Comparing Fats Used in Chocolate Chip Cookies." They had asked their classmates for opinions using a sensory evaluation form, making it a social science research project rather than a food science and safety project.

The project placed 3rd in its division.

The various system areas included the following: social (Schneider-Kettelkamp and Hagen); food products and processing; power, structural and technical; animal; environmental and natural resources; and plant (Nanda and Krug).

More than 14,700 students from across Iowa participate in the Iowa FFA Association. The association strives to "develop students' potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education."

Barb Lemmer is the Agricultural Ed teacher and FFA sponsor at Linn-Mar. Her student teacher is Megan Talley.
