70 YEARS AGO 1947

Leighton Ford has been appointed to the Marion Police Department by Mayor John C. Mullin. He will begin work on May 1. Ford formerly served as an officer before entering the military service, where he spent four years with the 8th Air Force.

The City Street Department is bringing two blocks to grade this week. They are located at 12th Avenue, between 24th and 26th streets. The road will be surfaced with rock. This road, in front of three houses being constructed by Mrs. Irving Finger, will be paid by the city for the grading. The property owner pays for cost of the surfacing.

A group of Marion businessmen met on Monday night in Attorney Stanley Nielson's office to discuss the possibility of a merger between Marion and the city of Cedar Rapids. Known as the "Better Community Project Committee," the men elected N. P. Kepros as chair. Topics of discussion were the various benefits to Marion residents and businesses if the cities were to merge. Attending were Nielson, Kepros, Marion Robb, William Gibson, Carl Stuber, M. L. Downey, Henry Arp Jr., D. C. Marchant, Irvin Castle, and William Elder.

50 YEARS AGO 1967

The old mill dam north of 7th Avenue is one of the proposed sites now being considered by the city park board as a park of the future. Other sites include an area north of 8th Avenue at the fork of Indian Creek and Dry Creek, a site to be designated in the Carriage Hills area which is next to Thomas Park, the Boyson property adjacent to Donnelly Park, a site in the vicinity of 22nd Street and Hillview Drive, and property north of the city lagoon site of the present sanitary landfill. The federal government will participate with the city in acquisition of approved park sites.

30 YEARS AGO 1987

On April 23, a hearing will be held by the Marion Independent School Board on the topic of selling the Washington Elementary School. The meeting will be held at Longfellow School at 8:30 p.m.

Marc McCoy has been appointed Associate Superintendent at Linn-Mar High School. At present, he holds the same position at Roosevelt School in Cedar Rapids.
