Indians pick up first win of 2017
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · April 20th, 2017

After suffering a tough 8-3 defeat at the hands of the Solon Spartans last Tuesday evening, the Marion girls' soccer team bounced back in a big way with a 3-0 triumph over Vinton-Shellsburg on the road last Thursday night. The win was not only Marion's first victory this season overall, but also their first WaMaC Conference victory.

Sophomore Naomi Smith led the charge against Vinton-Shellsburg with two goals, while freshman Kayba Laube found the back of the net as well to help the Indians' offensive attack. Melanie Noble recorded Marion's lone assist and Grace Byers recorded four saves to earn the shutout victory between the pipes.

In the 8-3 defeat against Solon, Smith, Laube, and Saige Trca scored goals for Marion. Smith, Trca, and Corrina Dittmer all assisted on goals as well. Byers was busy from the opening kick, recording 16 saves on 24 shots on goal against a very talented Spartan team.

The Indians will hit the road this week as they look to add to their 2017 win total. Marion travels to Independence on Tuesday and to South Tama County on Friday.
