Lions stun IC West, CR Wash
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · April 20th, 2017

After a bit of a slow start to the 2017 season, the Linn-Mar boys' soccer team members are back to their winning ways with a pair of thrilling wins last week over Iowa City West and Cedar Rapids Washington. The Lions earned a 2-0 shutout over West, while the victory over Washington came in the form of a 3-2 shootout.

Danny Peak and Noah Martin each scored a goal in the win over West to help the Linn-Mar cause. Peak, Grant Wagner and Koby Wesselink each had assists in the win over the previously third-ranked Trojans. Cody Ritter had five saves to lead the defensive unit for the Lions.

Nate Mentzer got the scoring underway for the Lions as he lifted them to a 1-0 lead, but the previously second-ranked Warriors bounced back with back-to-back goals within minutes of each other to take a 2-1 lead over Linn-Mar. That would not faze the Lions as Danny Peak fired a goal to tie things up and force the extra soccer. After going scoreless in overtime, the Lions outscored Wash, due in large part to a pair of monster saves by the veteran goalkeeper Ritter. Ritter finished with three saves in the victory as the Lions improved their record of 3-4 overall.

Linn-Mar will be back in action again this week with a home game on Tuesday against Cedar Rapids Xavier and a road contest on Thursday against Dubuque Senior.
