The Helen G. Nassif Community Cancer Center subscribes to a mission of "Providing exceptional cancer care that places you at the center of all we do." This is a patient-centered and physician driven care philosophy. And it involves the children related to the patients.

Recently Danielle Rauser, Development Manager for Cancer Services, gave a presentation and tour to the Marion/Cedar Rapids Optimist Club during a recent Wednesday morning meeting held at the Cancer Center.

Rauser explained many of the different ways the patients are served - not only through a top-rate medical team but also through warm surroundings and interaction with others. Her tour illustrated a wide variety of ways the team supports the patients and their families.

The Optimist Club had decided to give some funding to the Cancer Center and presented Rauser with a check for $1,000 which will be used for a "Cooking Class for Kids!" in September.

Mary Klinger, Unity Point Health-St. Luke's Foundation President was also present at the check ceremony. She is a member of the Optimist group.

Klinger said that in September they will invite all of the patients (parents and grandparents) who have children in the home to attend the cooking class. In addition, the staff will discuss caregiving, family time and working together.

The recipes will be parent-and-child-interactive. The various food stations will be based on each child's ability, and related topics - such as washing hands and having a clean work area - will be part of the activities.

"Lastly," Klinger said, "we will allow the children to play with food and eat during 'class time' - what child doesn't want to do that!"
