Brooks leads Indians at WaMaC meet
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · May 11th, 2017

Blair Brooks was a triple-winner for the Marion boys' track and field team last week at the annual WaMaC Conference Track and Field Meet. The junior swept both jumping events and edged Center Point-Urbana phenom, JoJo Frost, in the 110-meter high hurdles, helping the Indians place third in the star-studded 16-team field. Brooks' leap of 22'8 " in the long jump was a meet record.

Brooks wasn't the only winner for Marion last Thursday as both Jeremy Fopma and Myles Bach claimed gold as well. Bach edged Fopma by nearly seven seconds to win the 3200 meter run but it was Fopma who was victorious in the 1600 meter run. Fopma crossed the stripe with a time of 4:35.27, just .36 seconds ahead of Mount Vernon's Jack Young.

The Marion girls were led by their distance ace Hallie Kephart. Kephart was the runner-up in the 3000-meter run and was the bronze medalist in the 1500-meter race. Sydney Brase battled her way to third in the 400-meter hurdles to help the Marion cause as well.

The Marion girls tallied 44 points, placing seventh overall in the standings. Mount Vernon won the conference title on the girls side while Western Dubuque cruised to the meet championship with 134.5 points, 30.5 better than runner-up Mount Vernon.

The Indians will load their lineups this Thursday for the Class 3A District Meet in Marion with hopes of sending as many qualifiers as possible to the 2017 Iowa High School State Track and Field Meet in Des Moines next week.
