Court sentences teen to State Training School in Eldora
by DJ Kauffman Correspondent · May 18th, 2017

A somber silence settled over the Linn County Juvenile Justice Center courtroom, as details of a case involving students came to light.

Logan McMurrin, now 16, appeared impassive as he sat next to his attorney throughout his disposition hearing on the morning of Thursday, May 11, where Judge Angie Wilson eventually sentenced him to the State Training School at Eldora until possibly 19 1/2 years of age.

Reporters, including from the Times, were later told the administration at the training school will determine if McMurrin can have home visits and/or be released early. Once McMurrin is finally released, the court said he will be required to register as a sex offender.

Judge Wilson had convicted McMurrin of the sexual abuse at an adjudicatory hearing in March. During the May 11 disposition, the judge said the kindergartners took the stand at the hearing, where they gave consistent testimonies. She said in her experience, young children tell the truth in cases like this.

According to a released statement made by the Marion Independent School District Board of Education, "On October 24, 2016, the District was made aware of allegations that a high school student who was volunteering in a classroom at Starry Elementary had inappropriately touched students in that classroom."

McMurrin declined to make a statement to the court about the matter. And, before sentencing, the students' parents emotionally read their statements about how McMurrin's actions have traumatized their daughters, their families and the community.

The Times asked MISD Superintendent Chris Dyer if there are pending lawsuits by parents whose children were involved. Dyer said, "On advice of council, MISD has no comment on matters of litigation."
