Marion Independent and Linn-Mar students learned many valuable hands-on lessons from Marion Building Trades program instructor Bruce Weisinger as they built the home located at 1064 Alexis Court in Marion from scratch. The following nine students from Marion High School participated in the project: Dakotah Brecht, Brady Donahue, Ryan Draeger, Tylor Fairbanks, Austin Gleason, Isaak Hahn, Briar Lewis, Noah Sams, and Blake Vanourney. The following five students are from Linn-Mar High School: Chase Bading, Nick Gonsoski, Blake Houdeshell, Devon Svoboda and Kegan Welsh. According to Welsh, Weisinger said they were required to build it as if they themselves would live in the house.

Six of the 14 students were on hand to give tours of the new ranch-style home during an open house on Friday, May 19, from 5-8 p.m. From left to right are Dakotah Brecht, Isaak Hahn, Briar Lewis, Tylor Fairbanks, Devon Svoboda and Kegan Welsh pictured with their instructor Bruce Weisinger near the fireplace in the livingroom.

Brecht, who worked with stonework and flooring, said it was a good experience, and Hahn said it expanded his horizons as he learned about the hidden things in a home, such as pipes. Brecht, Lewis, Fairbanks, and Svoboda said they are considering careers in the construction trade, while Hahn and Welsh said it is a possibility for them as well.

The newly constructed four-bedroom, three-bath residential Marion home is listed for sale with Skogman realtor Tom Davis RealtorŪ, 319-651-7793. The listing price is $309,000; MLS# 1705696.
