Several Marion Independent School District agenda items were discussed at the regular BOE meeting on Monday evening, June 12, at 7 p.m., including an update on Longfellow Elementary additional geothermal costs and construction progress.

According to MISD Business Manager, John Donner, installation for an underground geothermal system for the new Longfellow Elementary School was more complicated and costly than the school board planned. He said a second company with larger equipment was ultimately hired to complete the project and additional costs are under review.

In addition, Head of Maintenance Ken Cook, who attended the meeting, said Longfellow Elementary construction crews have been working tirelessly alongside his team in order to have the facility ready when the 2017-18 school year begins. They have recently started to lay a wood floor in the gym and should begin adding furniture around July 15. They are anticipating the completion of everything except the playground area before a public open house is held at the Longfellow site after July 1. It has been a "great project with good contractors," he added.
