The Marion softball team is starting to pick up a little steam as they approach Class 4A postseason play. The Indians won four games last week and now hold a record of 9-21 overall. Marion was able to split games against a pair of WaMaC conference opponents while also beating North Cedar and Bondurant-Farrar in non-conference action.

Trailing 2-1 entering the last inning against Center Point-Urbana, the Indians erupted for seven runs to earn the hard-fought win. Sydney Nielsen, Alicia Steepleton, and Maddie Steffen all drove in two runs apiece while Jordyn Dunn and Gabby Goad both drove in one run to help the Indians prevail. Steepleton went the distance on the mound to pick up the win, striking out five Stormin' Pointers in the process.

Steepleton was the winning pitcher against North Cedar as well, tossing a complete game with 10 strikeouts. Nielsen went four-for-five at the dish with a home run and three RBIs. Goad and Karlee Walker also drove in a pair of runs.

Eighth-grader Megan Kessens got the Indians' third win of the week against Williamsburg by an 11-9 final. The youngster pitched all seven innings and struck out four Raiders to help the Marion cause. Dunn and Maddie Knapp each recorded three RBIs apiece to power the Marion offense, while Nielsen pounded home two more of her own.

Kessens picked up her second win of the week against Bondurant-Farrar on Saturday and struck out two batters in seven innings. Shannon Sellers went two-for-three batting and had a team-high three RBIs to give the Marion bats life.

Marion will continue to try and fine tune their game with postseason play looming. The IGHSAU recently released the postseason pairing and the Indians find themselves matched up with Maquoketa on Thursday, July 6, at 7 p.m. in Marion. Winner of the bracket moves on to play Mount Pleasant on Saturday, July 8, at 7 p.m. at Mount Pleasant.
