by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · June 29th, 2017

Despite winning two out of four games over the weekend, the Linn-Mar softball girls placed 10th out of 16 teams in attendance when the dust settled on Saturday. The Lions suffered a loss in the opening round against Bettendorf before rallying to defeat both Cedar Rapids Washington and Mount Vernon to enter the ninth-place game against Northeast Goose Lake. The Rebels defeated the Lions 4-2 to grab ninth place and hand Linn-Mar their second loss of the weekend.

Earlier in the week, the Lions swept Washington and were swept by Prairie. Linn-Mar defeated the Warriors 12-0 in both contests. Katie Smith pitched just two innings in Game One to get the win and was relieved by Briley Berning. Smith struck out four while Berning had a strikeout of her own. Elison Ollinger hit a three-run homer to lead the Lions offensively. In game two, Morgan Braughton struck out four Warriors in two innings to get the victory. Madison Beard relieved Braughton and struck out one as well. Natalie Shepherd hit a three-run homer while Christina Lincoln had four RBIs of her own as the Lions finished the night playing just six total innings.

The Lions' losses against Prairie came by tallies of 3-2 and 4-3. Smith and Braughton took the losses on the mound.

Linn-Mar's record now sits at 20-11 overall. They're scheduled to play Cedar Rapids Xavier and Dubuque Wahlert this week. The girls will then head to postseason play in the Class 5A regionals against Cedar Falls on July 8, at 7 p.m., on their home turf.
