Advertisement Indians earn three shutouts, split with Beckman
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · July 6th, 2017

The Marion baseball team's hot stretch of play continued last week after picking up a shutout win over North Cedar in non-conference play, a pair of shutouts over Solon and a split with Dyersville Beckman. Winners of seven out of their last eight, the Indians now own a record of 24-7 on the season.

The Tuesday night contest against North Cedar was a wooden bat game for the teams in which the Indians prevailed 5-0. Nick Cole was wheelin' and dealin' on the mound, striking out six batters and allowing just three hits. Parker Ridge, Baylor Fish, Owen Carstensen, Chase Zielke and Trevor Paulson each drove in one run apiece to help the Marion cause.

Marion defeated Solon in both contests by a final tally of 4-0. Luke Golla was a winner in one contest while Paulsen pitched a beauty of a game in the second one. The game went into extra innings and Paulsen pitched all eight innings, allowing just one hit against the Spartans. Carstensen had the offensive heroics as he smashed a grand slam to get the Indians on the board for the win.

In game one against Beckman, Marion was edged 11-10 after a seventh inning rally by the Blazers. Carstensen took the loss on the mound despite just two innings of work. Ridge led the charge for the Indians at the plate with three RBIs while Carstensen helped his own cause with two RBIs of his own.

In game two, Cole picked up another win, striking out six batters in the process. Carstensen's bat stayed hot as he drove in two more runs to power the Indians offensively in the 5-3 win.

Marion's scheduled to play Williamsburg, Maquoketa and Vinton-Shellsburg this week.
