To the Editor:

The August 1 Linn County special election ballot offers a choice of three methods of electing county supervisors. I prefer Plan One, which calls for open at-large elections, over candidate residency districts with or without exclusive representation in each district. Plan One can't be gerrymandered, anyone can run, every vote carries equal weight, and each supervisor is answerable to all the voters.

I don't think an at-large system would deprive rural areas of influence. Even if districts were drawn to guarantee a "rural seat", that supervisor would still be outnumbered. Elected at large, every supervisor candidate would need to take Linn County's substantial rural voting bloc into account. Don't forget how the three-supervisors-at-large system brought notable rural leaders like Democrat Jean Oxley and Republican Lumir Dostal to the Linn County Board.
