Queens of the jungle trample Tigers thrice
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · July 13th, 2017

Five was the magic number set for the Linn-Mar Lion softball team when postseason brackets were released by the IGHSAU. Five wins would get them the 2017 Class 5A Iowa High School State Softball Championship. But, as everyone knows, you can't get to five without getting one and two and so on. Last Saturday was the Lions' opportunity to get the first win and the team capitalized on their shot, eliminating Cedar Falls by virtue of a 5-2 win after defeating the Tigers in a doubleheader on Monday, July 3, with scores of 13-3 and 10-0.

The Lions were led offensively by junior Mariam Berry who went 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of RBIs. Berry did her work out of the eighth slot in the batting order while ninth hitter, Carly Rima, also drove in a run to help the Linn-Mar cause. Elison Ollinger went 2-for-4 with a single, a double and an RBI.

Ollinger pitched three and two-thirds innings of scoreless ball and relieved winning pitcher Katie Smith. Smith allowed two hits and five runs to keep the Tigers at bay.

The win over the Tigers sets up a Class 5A Region 4 final matchup with Urbandale as the winners will advance to the state tournament in Fort Dodge. First pitch was on Tuesday, July 11, at 7 p.m. in Urbandale. Results were unknown at press time.
