Marion splits with Vikings
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · July 13th, 2017

The Marion baseball team needed a pair of wins over Vinton-Shellsburg to stay alive in the hunt for the WaMaC West Division title race. Unfortunately, the Indians were only victors in one of the two contests after losing game one, 4-3, and winning game two, 6-5. The split pushed Marion's record to a solid 28-8 overall for the 2017 campaign.

In the 4-3 loss for the Indians, Brady Donohue took the loss on the mound. The senior went the distance, striking out seven Viking batters in the process.

At the plate, Parker Ridge drove in two runs while Chase Zielke pounded in a run of his own, but it wasn't enough to give Marion the win.

In the 6-5 victory in game two, it took nine innings for the Indians to gain the win. Rick Atkins struck out eight in six innings of work, but took a no-decision on the mound. Luke Golla finished with three innings of work and the win, allowing just two hits while striking out five in the process.

Blair Brooks went 2-for-3 at the dish and drove in two runs while Ridge and Owen Carstensen helped out the Marion cause with an RBI apiece.

Marion looked to close out regular season play on a high note with a double-header scheduled against Epworth, Western Dubuque on Tuesday, July 12. After that, the Indians will begin postseason play on Friday, July 14, at home against Maquoketa. First pitch will be released shortly after the conclusion of Center Point-Urbana and Cedar Rapids Xavier's contest which starts at 5 p.m. in Marion. The winners from both match-ups will then square off on Monday, July 17, in Marion at 7 p.m.
