Little Free Library Dedication held on the 4th
by Nancy Grindle Correspondent · July 13th, 2017

One of the basic freedoms we appreciate is the freedom of speech, the right to say or write our thoughts and to read what others have written.

Therefore, the ceremony which was held at Summit Pointe Senior Living community on the 4th of July seemed especially fitting. A number of residents, friends and members of the community met to dedicate a new Little Free Library on the grounds of Summit Pointe.

This little library was built by Jackson DeFrees, based on a picture he was given of Summit Pointe. He even included the clock, which is one of the outstanding features of the building.

One of the people who was instrumental in promoting and registering the Little Free Library was Cathy Weber, Outreach Coordinator for Summit Pointe. And because the residents do not have a lot of children's books available, Dawn Cline, Outreach Services Director from the Marion Public Library, has provided children's books and will continue to do so. Both she and Eileen Robinson, secretary of the Library Board, attended the event on the 4th.

Little Free Libraries can be seen in various locations around Marion and the surrounding area. They are registered and part of a worldwide network of locations where people can take a book and leave a book.

The original idea was the brain child of Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin. He founded the 501(c) nonprofit organization in 2009 and there are now more than 50,000 Little Free Libraries around the world.

The purposes of the organization are threefold. It "inspires a love of reading, builds community, and sparks creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges."
