The Marion baseball team's successful season just keeps getting better and better. After closing out the regular season with a pair of losses to Western Dubuque, the Indians are back to their winning ways. Marion opened up Class 3A postseason play last Friday by knocking out Maquoketa with a 9-1 victory and followed it up by bouncing Cedar Rapids Xavier out of contention on Monday, July 17, with a 4-2 triumph. The win over the Saints sets up a matchup with the Solon Spartans where the winner will advance to the Class 3A State Tournament.

Brady Donohue pitched a gem of a game to lead the Indians to the win over Maquoketa, going the distance and striking out 13 Cardinal batters in the process. Sophomore Rick Atkins went the distance against the Saints, striking out four batters and giving up just three hits in seven innings of work.

The substate final game took place at Solon on Wednesday, July 19, at 7 p.m. Marion owns a 30-10 record heading into the game while the Spartans counter with a record of 27-13. Results unknown at press time.
