In connection with the current Marion Heritage Center exhibit, classes in various media were offered to interested people. One of the classes was taught by Jean Murray on the topic of pastel portraiture. It was held Tuesday morning, July 11.

As you can see, the students had a great time learning about using pastels and creating images of the session's model, Jeanne Hepker.

Murray, in the red apron, is well-known for her work, one of which portrays former local golf champion Bob Vavra. That particular pastel chalk portrait was included in the 'ART by Your Friends and Neighbors' exhibit at the Center and was hanging on the wall when the class was in session.

Among the students in the session were Mary Platten, Leslie Fox, Lynette Brenzel, Jay Kacena, Nevin Meredith and Lorie Bramley.

Murray complimented Ms. Hepker for being an excellent model; she didn't move, even when something fell and made a loud sound.

Over the duration of the class, Murray used a number of tools, such as a straight-edge, and showed students how to calculate the distances between the top of the head to eyes, nose, alignment of ears, etc.

She went around the room and helped each student individually. No one seemed to mind as we wandered around and took pictures while the class was in session.

More than 50 works by local artists in the ART by Your Friends and Neighbors were in the exhibit, which can be viewed through July 29. A number of them are for sale. In addition, people can vote for their favorite work. Hills Bank announced it will award cash prizes at the end of the show to the three most popular artists.

Jay Kacena was the exhibit chairman and taught one of the earlier classes this year.

If you have not had an opportunity to see the exhibit yet, hours for the Heritage Center are Wednesday through Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. or by appointment (319-447-6376).
