It took nine innings to determine a winner and a Class 3A state qualifier last Wednesday night in Solon, but when the dust settled, the Marion Indians reigned supreme and stayed alive. The Indians fought off a valiant effort by the Solon Spartans to grab a 4-3 win and advance to the Class 3A Iowa High School State Baseball Tournament.

Solon jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after two innings of play, but the Indians battled back to knot it up after three innings. The Indians took their first lead of the game in the fifth inning and appeared to be on their way to victory before the Spartans drove in a run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at three and send it into extra innings. In the top of the ninth, Marion regained the lead with a 4-3 advantage and closed out the game to get the victory and state bid.

On the mound, Luke Golla got the win after nearly three innings of work and no hits allowed. Brady Donohue got a no-decision starting after 6 and ⅓ innings of work with four strikeouts.

Trevor Paulson was the man on fire offensively for the Indians. Paulson drove in three runs and scored once to power the Marion attack while Chase Zielke drove in a run as well to help the Indian cause.

The win improved Marion's record to 31-10 overall and gave them the fifth seed in the Class 3A bracket. They squared off with fourth-seeded Dubuque Wahlert, who owns a record of 26-15 on the year at Principal Park in Des Moines. First pitch was on Tuesday, July 25, at 1:30 p.m. Results were unknown at press time.

*Update: The Indians fell to Dubuque Wahlert 5-4. Coverage of the game to be published in the August 3, Marion Times.
