Indians ousted in heartbreaking game
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · August 3rd, 2017

The Marion baseball team's first appearance at the Iowa High School State Baseball tournament since 2011 ended in dramatic fashion on Tuesday, July 25, at Principal Park in Des Moines, Iowa. The Indians were defeated by Dubuque Wahlert by a 5-4 final tally after being in control for most of the contest.

The Indians started the game red-hot out of the gates after Mitch Wiese drove in a pair of runs to give Marion an early 2-0 advantage. Sophomore Trevor Paulson padded the lead just a couple of innings later as he recorded an RBI to push the Indians' lead to 3-0.

Wahlert stayed persistent throughout and never backed down from Marion. The Golden Eagles got on the board in the bottom portion of the third inning, cutting the lead to 3-2 before finally tying things up in the fifth inning.

Marion appeared to have the upper hand after a Baylor Fish sacrifice fly to give the Indians a 4-3 heading into the bottom half of the seventh inning, but, unfortunately, the wheels fell off. Wahlert tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh to win on a walk-off single by Joey Callahan to overtake the Indians by a 5-4 final score.

Parker Ridge crossed the plate twice for the Indians while Nick Cole went 2-for-3 batting out of the eighth spot. Brady Donohue struck out five in a little over four innings of work in his final game as an Indian, while sophomore Rick Atkins took the loss on the mound.

The loss ended Marion's season with a 31-11 overall record and their third state appearance in the school's history.

Wahlert fell in the semifinal round to Davenport Assumption, which eventually became champion.
