Lions eliminated by Dragons
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · August 3rd, 2017

The Linn-Mar baseball team knew they would have their hands full right off the bat in the Class 4A State Baseball Tournament last Wednesday, July 26. The Lions earned the number eight seed, which pinned them against top-seeded and top-ranked Johnston. After a solid start in the top of the first inning for Linn-Mar, it was all Johnston after that as the Dragons cruised to a 7-1 opening round win.

Kirby Kerr crossed the plate for Linn-Mar's lone run after a Johnston error to give the Lions a 1-0 lead, but it was short lived as the Dragons got on the board with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the first. Johnston went on to score once in the second, once in the third and three more times in the fourth inning for insurance.

Offensively, Kerr finished with two of the five Lion hits as Johnston's ace Jack Dreyer was superb in his five innings of work, striking out 10 Linn-Mar batters in the process.

Josh Strauss took the loss on the mound for the Lions as he was roughed up in three innings of work.

The loss ended Linn-Mar's season at 21-19 overall and it was their sixth appearance at the state tournament. Johnston went on to defeat Waukee and Dowling Catholic to claim the Class 4A State Championship.
