The Humanists of Linn County, along with Freethinking Families of Linn County, Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers, and the Iowa Coalition of Reason, is hosting Parenting Beyond Belief, a workshop designed to empower secular parents to raise ethical, caring, confident kids without religion. This workshop is presented by noted author and educator, Dale McGowan, at the Indian Creek Nature Center, 5300 Otis Rd., Cedar Rapids, IA 52403, on Saturday, August 26, 2017, from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Based on the book Newsweek called "a compelling read," the Parenting Beyond Belief workshop will help answer such questions as:

How does moral development really work?

How can I communicate effectively with my religious extended family?

How can I ease my child's fears about death without pretending there's an afterlife?

How can my kids learn about religion without being indoctrinated into religion?

There will be a separate track for children ages 5 and up with activities such as a nature walk with a naturalist, story time, science experiments, and more. Additionally, there will be a silent auction with many interesting and fun items to bid on.

Admission is free; a suggested donation of $10 per individual / $15 per family to help defray costs is appreciated. RSVP through Eventbrite ( or call 319-423-9440.

Dale McGowan offers encouragement and practical solutions for secular parenting in a religious world. Mr. McGowan is author of "Raising Freethinkers: A Practical Guide to Parenting Beyond Belief," "Parenting Beyond Belief: On Raising Ethical, Caring Kids Without Religion," "Atheism for Dummies," "In Faith and In Doubt: How Religious Believers and Nonbelievers Can Create Strong Marriages and Loving Families," and more. He was founding executive director of the humanist charity, Foundation Beyond Belief, and he is currently director of engagement for Patheos, where he works with hundreds of writers in a dozen different world views. In 2008 he was named Harvard Humanist of the Year for his work in nonreligious parent education.
