Elections are fast approaching for selecting a number of school board members in both the Marion Independent and Linn-Mar districts.

Thursday, August 3, is the last day a candidate can file the appropriate documents so his or her name can be included on the ballot for the election to be held September 12.

The Marion Chamber of Commerce and the Marion Economic Development Corporation will host forums for each district so that the public can hear candidates' views on important issues.

The first forum is set for Tuesday, August 15, at Lowe Park for those running for office on the Linn-Mar board. It will begin at 7 p.m. and end at approximately 8:30 p.m. (Lowe Park is at 4500 10th Street.)

The forum will follow a question-and-answer format and will be moderated by Bob Hoyt, a retired middle school principal from the Marion Independent District. Voters will be able to submit questions to Hoyt so that candidates can answer them.

The second forum will be held on Thursday, August 17, at the Safe Room at Thomas Park and will feature candidates for the Marion Independent board. (The location is at 343 Marion Boulevard.)

Again the time will be from 7 p.m. to about 8:30 p.m., and the evening will follow a question-and-answer format. The moderator this time will be Kent Stock, a former middle school principal at Linn-Mar.
