A first ever, Two for Foundation 2: A Night of Duets fundraising event showcased local talented musicians as they performed on stage at the Giving Tree Theater in Marion on Thursday, August 3. The evening began with a social hour at 7 p.m., followed by various musical performances starting at 8 p.m.

"The Foundation 2 serves many families from Marion, and their partnership with the Giving Tree Theater helps to make the fundraiser special for Marion residents," said Foundation 2 Development/Marketing Coordinator Elisabeth Kissling.

More than $3,000 were collected from ticket sales and more was donated during the event. Proceeds from ticket sales and cash offerings will help support the Foundation 2 Youth Shelter located at 3015 12th Avenue SW in Cedar Rapids. Foundation 2 is an "emergency shelter to youth between the ages of 11 and 17, and it is available to both voluntary and system youth," said Kissling. "We can house up to 17 young people at any given time. Last year our shelter had 368 admissions."

According to Kissling, Bowman Woods Principal Tina March thought of the idea to host the musical fundraiser while she served on the Foundation 2 board. March is also "involved in Follies and other community music events and thought that bringing her talented friends together for an evening of music to support Foundation 2 services would be a unique way to raise awareness for our agency and funds for youth in crisis," she said.

Also, March involved the Akers, Alisabeth Von Presley, and Estella in coordinating the event, while Kissling served as the Foundation 2 representative, and many others helped to make the fundraiser possible.

The vocal and instrumental performers included: Heather and Richie Akers, Von Presley, Catherine Blades, Jackson Bartelme, Greg Smith, Scott Dix, Gerard Estella, Christina Farrell, Jennifer Ford, Cathy Koebrick, Jan McCool, Tina March, Steve Rezabek, Joe Wetrich, Tracie Hodina Van Pelt, June Schumacher, Elizabeth Barrett, and Robert Lindsey-Nassif.

"All of the musicians have a connection to Tina, and some also have their own connection to Foundation 2. We are lucky to have each and every musician that is a part of this event," Kissling said.

The Giving Tree Theater was chosen for the location for its "amazing, cozy space. It was perfect for the the evening they planned and owners Richie and Heather Akers are charitable," she said. For example, they donate proceeds from each show to a non-profit selected by the show's cast, and they selected the Foundation 2 as their first donation recipient. "We are also happy to work with Giving Tree because Heather Akers from Giving Tree recently joined Foundation 2's Board of Directors."

"If you or someone you know is experiencing a crisis, Foundation 2 is here for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week," mentioned Kissling. "Along with our youth shelter, we offer a crisis hotline, chat and text support, therapy services, support groups, mobile crisis outreach, family counseling and independent living support for youth. Home shelter alternatives are also available."
