70 YEARS AGO 1947

The Linn County Old Settlers Reunion will be expanded for this year's 57th annual meeting to be held at City Park. There will be a parade with decorated floats and tricycle and bicycle races will follow the parade. Cash prizes will be awarded for the parade floats and winners of the races. A special program with prizes will be held for the Old Settlers. This year's special events committee members are E. A. Lagerquist, H. A. Culbert, and Marvin Edison.

A committee was named to improve the Police shack on the northeast corner of City Park after discussions at a special council meeting. Mayor Biddick suggested that at a small expense, the appearance of the shack, which is currently covered with advertising for the All Iowa Fair, could be greatly improved. Assigned as committee members are Robert Hoff, P. C. Lassen and Ralph Williams.

50 YEARS AGO 1967

Building plans were presented to the Marion Independent School Board at their last meeting. The plans call for an addition to the existing high school and classroom additions at Washington and Emerson Elementary. Any plans would have to be approved by district voters before any construction can begin.

Air tours of Linn County Conservation projects are being offered to area residents for $5.00 per person. Flights will originate from the Linn Aire airport during the hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and last approximately 30 minutes. Riders are encourage to request fly overs of their farms or homes.

30 YEARS AGO 1987

There are seven people running for the three open seats on the Marion Independent School Board. The terms of Jay Kacena, Darrell Helgens and Greg Hapgood have expired. Hapgood is seeking re-election and will appear on the ballot along with William Huntoon, Roger Krauser, Michael Nash, Thomas Thurman, Robert White, and Robert Schuette.

The 1987 Iowa AAU/USA Junior Olympic baseball state champion is Linn-Mar. The team is coached by Mike Mulherin and Orvil Sarsfield. With this win, the team has earned a trip to the national finals in Syracuse, NY, on August 9.
