Linn-Mar school board candidates participate in forum
by Nancy Grindle Correspondent · August 24th, 2017

The six candidates who are running for three Director at Large seats on the Linn-Mar school board participated in a forum sponsored by the Marion Chamber of Commerce and the Marion Economic Development Corporation (MEDCO). It was held on Tuesday, August 15, at 7 p.m. at Lowe Park.

Nick Glew, MEDCO's president, made opening remarks, and the forum was moderated by Bob Hoyt, an educator who served in the Marion Independent School District.

The candidates were seated in alphabetical order and are Robert Anderson, Bob Gabel, Derek Jensen, Cara Lausen, John Sauer and Rachel Wall.

The school board election will be held on Tuesday, September 12. An $80,000,000 bond referendum will also be on the ballot for Linn-Mar residents that day. If passed by 60 percent of the eligible voters, the referendum will provide funding for the following:

Two new 5th through 6th grade intermediate schools constructed for occupancy in 2019

Students in 7th through 8th grades to attend Excelsior and Oak Ridge Middle Schools

Construction of a new elementary school

Renovations to Excelsior Middle School, Bowman Woods, Indian Creek and Wilkins Elementary Schools

All elementary schools would become grades PK/K through 4th grade.

A satellite voting station will be open at the first home Linn-Mar football game on Friday, August 25, between the hours of 4 and 9:30 p.m. at the stadium. All eligible voters in the Linn-Mar Community School District may participate.

Voter registration forms will be available that night for new registrations and registration changes.
