The 2016 football season started off on a sour note for the Marion football team. The Indians suffered a 35-0 loss to Union, La Porte City. With the 2017 season kicking off against the same opponent, Coach Tim Lovell and his squad made sure things were different this time around. The Indians cruised to a 47-22 victory due in large part to the play of Trevor Paulsen. The junior quarterback put on a show at Thomas Park last Friday evening.

Paulsen was handed the quarterback reins a few weeks into the 2016 campaign and hasn't looked back. The dual-threat gunslinger completed 15 of his 21 passing attempts for 281 yards and four touchdowns. He also carried the ball 13 times for 100 yards and another score. Coach Lovell kept the Union staff and players guessing all night long.

Paulsen hit triple digits in rushing yards, but he wasn't even the team's leading rusher for the evening that title went to senior Chris Mohwinkle. Mohwinkle needed just eight carries to rack up 161 yards and two touchdowns. Mohwinkle also contributed in the pass game with three catches for 99 yards and a score.

Blair Brooks had a record-breaking performance as well, which included five catches for 92 yards and three touchdowns. Brooks took the school's all-time lead in receptions and yards in the process.

On the defensive side of things, Alex Whalen had a nose for the ball as he recorded eight-and-a-half tackles. Ben Woods had four-and-a-half tackles and a quarterback sack while Mason Rahe recorded an interception.

Marion will travel to Van Horne this week for a matchup with Benton Community on Friday, September 1, at 7:15 p.m. The Bobcats enter the contest with a 1-0 record after a 48-0 week one victory against Oelwein.
