Lions drop season opener
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · August 31st, 2017

The Paul James era started last Friday night at Linn-Mar High School in Marion as the Lions took on City High on the gridiron to open up their slate of games for 2017. It was a beautiful night for football compared to season opening games in years past, but unfortunately, the outcome wasn't exactly

what the Linn-Mar faithful were hoping for. The Lions suffered a 26-13 loss to the Little Hawks last Friday after the experienced City High squad pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Tied with 13 points at halftime, the Lions put themselves in a position to get a victory to open the season, but some mistakes were made, and City High capitalized to get their first win of the season.

Trot Carey, a converted wide receiver, took over the quarterback job and showed why he's a worthy candidate for the job. Carey finished the game with 181 yards through the air and scored a 48-yard touchdown on the ground. His lone touchdown pass was a 21-yard strike to Aaron Nibaur. Nibaur had nine catches for just under 100 yards.

The Lions will be looking for their first victory of the season this Friday night as they make the short trek to Cedar Rapids Xavier. The Saints holds a 1-0 record after defeating Class 1A's top-ranked squad Iowa City Regina by a 23-6 tally.
