Bobcats edge Indians
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · September 7th, 2017

After lighting up the scoreboard in week one, the Marion football team struggled to move the ball consistently and put up points as they suffered a 17-14 loss to Benton Community in Van Horne last Friday evening. The Indian offense put up just 110 yards of total offense in the losing effort.

Trevor Paulsen completed 11 of his 25 passing attempts for 72 yards and a touchdown. Paulsen also led the team with 24 rushing yards but he also needed 15 carries to get that total. The Benton defense turned up the pressure all night long and took advantage of an early Chris Mohwinkle injury that played a large part in Marion's sputtering offensive unit.

Junior duo Nate Miller and Nick Cole were all over the place defensively as they posted some gritty performances for Marion. Miller had a team-high 10 tackles, three of which were for losses while Cole had nine tackles and two quarterback sacks. Alex Whalen had a solid night as well with seven and a half tackles and a 75-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.

With the loss, the Indians now sit at 1-1 on the season. Marion will hit the road yet again next week as they do battle with Central DeWitt this Friday, September 8. Central DeWitt holds a record of 0-2 on the young season.
