Marion volleyball wins three, loses two
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · September 7th, 2017

A stretch of solid play landed the Marion volleyball team in the final four of the Warrior Invitational hosted by Cedar Rapids Washington last Saturday in Cedar Rapids. The Indians were winners of three of their five matches, getting bounced in the semifinals by Linn-Mar.

Marion recorded a 2-1 record in pool play, defeating Solon and Dubuque Senior while taking a loss to Class 2A's top-ranked team, Dike-New Hartford. Those totals resulted in a pool victory, placing them in the 8-team championship bracket. Marion dominated Davenport Central in the opening round before losing 15-25 and 22-25 to the Lions.

In the semifinal loss to Linn-Mar, Delaney Rice and Andrea Landuyt had five kills apiece while Caitlyn Smith finished with 13 assists. Smith also had the Indians' lone ace of the day.

When the dust settled, the Indians' record sits at 4-2 on the season. The team was back in action on Tuesday, September 5, at home against Vinton-Shellsburg with the results unknown at press time. Bouncing off the Tuesday night game, the Marion team will then compete in the Linn-Mar Volleyball Invitational on Saturday, September 9, at Linn-Mar. Pool play begins at 9 a.m.
