Linn-Mar spikers champions at Warrior Invite
by Brandon Leonard Correspondent · September 7th, 2017

An early pool play setback did not slow down the Linn-Mar volleyball team's effort nor rattle their cage. After losing their first game to Cedar Rapids, Xavier, the Lions won four straight games to claim the championship at the annual Warrior Invitational hosted by Cedar Rapids, Washington.

Linn-Mar disposed of Union, La Porte City and Oskaloosa in straight sets to close out pool play before eliminating Johnston in the quarterfinal round. The Lions took down their crosstown rival Marion Indians in two sets in the semifinals to set up a thrilling championship contest with perennial juggernaut Dike-New Hartford.

Suffering a loss to the Wolverines just one week ago, Linn-Mar answered the call and took care of business by winning in two sets, 29-27 and 25-23. Junior Anna Gorsich had 11 kills while fellow junior Tori Niemeyer had 10 kills of her own. Megan Renner had 29 assists and was perfect on all 12 of her serves.

The Warrior Invitational wasn't Linn-Mar's only action of the week as they took down Iowa City, West in four sets on Tuesday, August 29, in Iowa City. Gorsich recorded a team-high 15 kills while Ellie Von Lehmden had 12 kills on the night. Renner had 42 assists to along with five kills, giving the Women of Troy fits all night long.

The Lions now own a record of 9-3 on the season and faced off against Waterloo East at home on Tuesday, September 5, with results unknown at press time.

The team will then host its own volleyball invitational on Saturday, September 9, with the following teams competing: Davenport Assumption, Center Point-Urbana, Marion, Dubuque Hempstead, Muscatine, Pleasant Valley, Prairie, Solon, Sumner-Fredericksburg, Vinton-Shellsburg, and Waterloo East. Pool Play begins at 9 a.m.
