Chase Krug, a member of Future Farmers of America at Linn-Mar High School, attended the eighth annual AgDiscovery program at Iowa State University in late July 2017.

Krug was one of 16 high school students chosen from a total of 85 applicants for this special program, which is sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and hosted by ISU.

AgDiscovery is an outreach program intended to help high school students learn about careers in plant and animal science, and wildlife management. The program allows the students to live on a college campus and learn about agriculture from university professors and scientists in a variety of fields.

The focus of ISU's AgDiscovery program is to help students explore the interconnections between wildlife biology and conservation, laboratory technology and diagnostics, animal science and veterinary medicine.

Krug and the other students in his group lived in Eaton Hall on the ISU campus. They visited a number of facilities to get hands-on experience in anatomy, bacteriology, hematology, parasitology, immunology, embryology, animal necropsies, epidemiology and other veterinary diagnostic procedures.

The program also is an opportunity for students to gain a first-hand look at the many different career paths open to them in the area of agricultural sciences.

During the two weeks in the program, students visited all of these facilities:

Blank Park Zoo

Jester Park Equestrian Center

Reiman Gardens

Native Prairie Bison Ranch

Springbrook State Park

Animal Rescue League

C & M Acres Alpaca Farm

Obviously Ostriches

Green Ash Goat Farm

Calkins Nature Center

Hawkeye Breeders Service

Brad Coulson Taxidermy

Specialty Leather Productions

Story City Locker

ISU Swine & Poultry Farms

ISU College of Veterinary Medicine

Doggy Dude Ranch

MG Biologics

USDA's National Center for Animal Health

USDA Wildlife Services at Des Moines International Airport

Students also participated in diversity, character- and team-building activities and visited local cultural attractions such as the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum.

Iowa State is one of 22 university programs which were part of the USDA's AgDiscovery Program in 2017. Each of the universities participating focused on a specific area of interest to the nation's agriculture, such as plant health, entomology, veterinary science, animal care, wildlife biology, biotechnology, animal health and agribusiness.

Krug is currently president of the Linn-Mar FFA chapter.
