Pep Band brings joy
by Kelsey Ewing Correspondent · September 7th, 2017

The Marion High School Band performed on Friday, September 1, at Crestview Acres. Residents and staff members enjoyed listening to a Pep Band song performed by the 150-member band. Wayne Jackson, retired Marion High School teacher was the mastermind behind this event. "I went to Crestview to ask if they would like the band to perform for them ... then went to talk to Charles (Oldenkamp) and before I could get finished, he had said, 'Yes!'"

This is the first time the band has performed at the senior center, but it will definitely not be the last. Lindsey Henschel, Crestview Acres Administrator, said, "We want our patients to get out in the community and live life to its fullest. And we have noticed that music is the last thing to go in patients, so this brings them joy to be able to witness this event."

"It is always an honor to be able to share our time and abilities with the community," said Band Director Charles Oldenkamp. "Music is something that connects people beyond generations. It is a tremendous experience to see students experience that first hand. When students can see that music is something that can impact them throughout their lives, it deepens the work that we do in class every day."

Come see the Marion High School Band perform in upcoming performances. The band will be at the Marion High School home football games on September 15, 29 and October 13, as well as the Linn-Mar Marching Invitational on Saturday, September 23, in the morning. In the evening, is the 37th Annual Marion Marching Invitational. The event starts at 5 p.m., so don't miss these performances and do invite others to come.
