DKW Art Gallery & Studios owner Mark Weiser said he got the idea to make Marion a butterfly community after noticing THE chocolate SHOP's large, colorful, attached butterfly on its building.

Weiser received support for the butterfly project from THE chocolate SHOP owner Gae Sharp-Richardson and City of Marion officials. Weiser submitted The Butterfly Effect Proposal For Art Expansion to the City of Marion as part of his plan. He said he would like to see 12 artistic butterfly creations on display throughout Marion.

Besides the beauty and universal appeal of butterflies, Weiser said he is concerned about the growing threat to the insects' survival and is hoping to bring community awareness to this important subject.

According to northwestern.thelehighvalleypress.com, the butterfly " population has declined in recent decades because of pesticide use, especially herbicides; loss of fence rows; urbanization and other destruction of habitat; and loss of caterpillar host and nectar plans.
