70 YEARS AGO 1947

The Hallwood Cafe, 690 10th Street, has been elected to membership in the American Restaurant Association. Alex Nofal, co-owner of the cafe, made the announcement this week. Membership is restricted to one restaurant in a city or town in the United States. Hallwood, established by George Wood of Marion, has been in business at this location for many years.

Enthusiastic interest in the University of Iowa - UCLA football game this Friday has prompted six Iowa radio stations to form a special network to bring fans over the entire state a play-by-play account of the action. KRNT of Des Moines will originate the broadcast. Via a special hook-up, the word description will be relayed to Sioux City, Shenandoah, Waterloo, Burlington, and Council Bluffs. The broadcast, set for Friday, September 26, will begin at 10:15 p.m. The Iowa team played North Dakota last week and won, 59-0.

50 YEARS AGO 1967

Two Camp Fire Girls groups in Marion have decided to clean up litter on South 11th Street. The groups will be accomplishing two purposes. First, it will beautify the street, and second, it will enable the girls to work on one of their Camp Fire requirements.

There is still a limited supply of "Zip Code" books available at the Marion High School music department. The price is $1.00 each and are a necessity at the present time when all mailings require a zip code number.

Linn-Mar High School seniors have elected class officers for the coming year. They are: president, Dave Duran; vice-president, Bob Hoyt; and secretary-treasurer, Kitty Hough.

30 YEARS AGO 1987

Last Tuesday, in Des Moines, Farmers State Bank president, Clair Lensing, was installed as president of the Iowa Bankers Association. He assumed office at the association's 101st convention.

The Marion Chamber of Commerce will be holding its annual banquet on October 6, at CityCenter. The featured speaker will be Clark McCloud, president and chairman of the board of Teleconnect. The program will also feature comments by Eric Miles, Chamber president, and Dan Borman, the upcoming president.
